Specialty Records Corporation was founded in 1946. Warner Bros. Records took over in 1978, but kept the Specialty name up until 1996, when they changed it to WEA Mfg. Vinyl production was discontinued January 01 2002, to clear floorspace for their rising DVD production. Specialty pressed some Nirvana singles and promos in the early nineties. They etched a stamped SRC logo into the lacquers they received. It does not appear that they had an in-house mastering studio, most of the Nirvana releases they pressed were cut by Masterdisk. (The SLTS 12" promo in white sleeve, PRO-A-4365, does not have any mention of a mastering studio, but this too was most likely done by Masterdisk.) In addition to SRC inscribed by Specialty, Masterdisk etched SR1 into the lacquers after the catalog numbers. This means it's the first set of lacquers sent to Specialty, or second set if it says SR2 etc. Most matrices also include "I-I", which were etched into the lacquers or mothers by Specialty. This may mean mother 1 made from lacquer/ father 1, or stamper 1 made from mother 1. They may also have done some Masterdisk-mastered records which does not say SR, nor with added SRC logo. The Nevermind LP (DGC 24425) has GL-1, which would mean it should originally have been sent to another pressin plant, but the test pressing has Specialty test pressing labels. Other GL1 items have that part scratched out, and these lacquers were most likely sent to Specialty instead. They may also have pressed the 2000 reissue of Bleach, as Sub Pop was involved with Warner. However, the matrix codes only mention the catalog number and that it was mastered by Golden. WEA also manufactured CDs, cassettes, and VHS tapes. |
