Pennyroyal 3 - The Go Team - Scratch It Out/ Bikini Twilight

The white label is a double sided test pressing of the July and August releases in the monthly series by The Go Team. The vinyl is dark brown with minor black marbling, and becomes translucent when looked at with a light on the other side. It came in a white inner sleeve with large, red stamps on both sides. The labels also have stamps on both sides, and handwritten titles and K logos drawn in red felt tip pen. Only one copy has been found, accompanied by a letter written on the back of an unrelated promotional sheet of paper from Calvin Johnson of K Records.

The July side label also have the catalog number "GTJL-89" and the date "1-25-90" written in ballpoint pen. This is strange as the singles were originally released in July and August of 1989. The accompanying letter from Johnson to Phil, who was in distribution [1], was also dated a few days later, "2/7/90", and stated that these two singles would be available in two weeks, further adding to the mystery. It is not known where and by who the test pressing was dated. If it was done at the pressing plant which seems most likely, or even by K Records when the test pressings arrived at the office, it must mean that there was a reprint of the singles in early 1990. There is no official record of that, but at least of the July retail singles there are two variants of vinyl thickness and several variants of silkscreening and labels, so it is possible there was more than one pressing. The July side matrix code has been compared to retail and is identical. The L-codes identify that the plating was done by Greg Lee Processing, but mastering studio and pressing plant are unknown.

Kurt Cobain played guitar on Bikini Twilight together with Calvin Johnson and Tobi Vail [2]. It was recorded on 1989.04.21 in Tobi Vail's garage [3].
